Community development is a process where community members come together to take collective action and generate solutions to common problems. Community wellbeing (economic, social, environmental and cultural) often evolves from this type of collective action being taken at a grassroots level. Community development ranges from small initiatives within a small group to large initiatives that involve the broader community. Communities for Social Housing Institutions like the EHC, refer primarily to tenants and secondarily those localities within which social housing properties are situated.
The EHC’s core functions are the effective and efficient management of its rental units and the engagement of tenants. The EHC recognizes however that to proactively engage its tenants beyond the provision of housing will enhance the quality of life of the tenants and neighbourhoods within which the Company hold stock.
The Community Development department’s purpose is to implement and manage the EHC’s community development strategies, policies and plans to support the development of sustainable communities and enhanced quality of life for all EHC tenants and surrounding communities. Through the following:
Community development initiatives that creates a relationship between EHC and its tenants.
Planning and managing specific community development engagement
Empowerment programmes including education of tenants as to their responsibility to the effective running of their complexes
It is for this reason therefore that EHC seeks to develop programmes to enhance relationship and quality of living for the tenants.
To improve the social economic conditions of residents by using different intervention mechanisms.
Community engagement projects gives access to social support for tenants through various programmes.
The primary focus of development communication and information is to empower the poor and disadvantaged.
Community Development is viewed as a means to operationalize the development communication approach as well as to address information and service imbalances by bringing EHC closer to the tenants.
To empower residents to play a part in strategic, long term programs and services in their community.
To promote equality through community initiatives.
