South Africa in Level 2 of the national lock down

EHC supports the government’s phasing in of economic activities using lockdown stages to allow for a steady but controlled return to normalcy and the need to reopen the economy. Learn below what activities are allowed and which are restricted under level 2.

Here is a list of what is permitted and prohibited under level 2 regulations;


  • Inter-provincial traveling around South Africa
  • Sale of alcohol at off-sale and retail outlets
  • Sale of tobacco products
  • Gyms and fitness centers
  • Beaches and parks
  • Museums, galleries, libraries and archives
  • Restaurants
  • Water-based tourism activities (boat-based whale watching, scuba diving, shark cage diving, kayaking, river rafting, and speed boat rides)
  • Zoos, Aquaria, animal sanctuaries and rehabilitation centres
  • Swimming pools
  • Accommodation establishments
  • Tour operators
  • Casinos
  • Theatres and cinemas
  • Social events at places of residence (visits to friends and family restricted to 10 visitors at a time)
  • Social gatherings (funerals and weddings limited to 50 people)
  • Auctions
  • Sporting activities
  • Personal care services, including hairdressing, beauty treatments, make -up and nails salons and piercing and tattoo parlours
  • Bus and taxi services may carry 100-percent of the licensed capacity for any trip not regarded as long-distance travel in terms of sub-regulation.


  • Night vigils
  • Night clubs
  • Male and female initiation practices
  • Bus and taxi services may not carry more than 70-percent of the licensed capacity for long-distance travel.
  • International travel
  • Attendance of any sporting event by spectators.
